The Chief Nursing Officer Institute (CNOI), formerly known as CNOA, is a premier development program for new and aspiring Chief Nursing Officers (CNOs). This program offers a unique opportunity to engage with fellow CNOs and nurse leaders from across the country, gain practical leadership insights, and prepare for the complex challenges in today’s healthcare landscape.

Grounded in TNLI’s CLIR FrameworkTM—Courage, Learning, Innovating, and Relating—CNOI combines real-world applications with the latest research.

Scholarship Opportunities

We are proud to offer several levels of financial assistance, made possible through partnerships with Johnson & Johnson’s Race to Health Equity program and the Elisabeth C. DeLuca Foundation, to ensure this transformative experience is accessible to as many new and aspiring CNOs as possible.

Scholarships are available for applicants who:

  • Are currently in a nurse leadership role or on the CNO leadership track.
  • Identify as nurses from underrepresented or marginalized backgrounds.
  • Are part of organizations with limited financial resources to support conference attendance.

How to Apply

Complete our online application form and include a letter from your organization indicating the financial support they can provide. Applications are open until December 20th. Scholarships are awarded on a rolling basis, so early submissions are encouraged.

About the faculty.

Dr. Joyce Batcheller
DNP, RN, NEA-BC, FAONL, FAAN

Dr. Joyce Batcheller is the President and Co-founder of The Nurses Legacy Institute and CEO/Founder of CNO Space. She has extensive experience as a system Chief Nursing Officer and is a national leader in transforming nursing practice and improving patient outcomes. Dr. Batcheller has led large-scale changes, including the implementation of system-wide shared governance and the integration of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Transforming Care at the Bedside Project. Her leadership has resulted in nine system hospitals achieving Magnet® or Pathway to Excellence® designations. Joyce is a Fellow of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership and the American Academy of Nursing


Dr. Patricia (Pat) S. Yoder-Wise
RN, EdD, NEA-BC, ANEF, FAONL, FAAN

Dr. Pat Yoder-Wise is Vice President and Co-Founder of The Nurses Leadership Institute and a distinguished professor and author of numerous articles and texts on leadership in nursing. She has worked in nursing service, professional associations, and academic institutions—always with the focus on advocating for frontline care for people. As a former president of the Texas Nurses Association, the American Nurses Credentialing Center, the National League for Nursing, and other prominent organizations, she has influenced leadership development across the nursing profession. Pat has also helped shape the future of nursing education as Professor and Dean Emerita at Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center, where she played a key role in establishing the School of Nursing. Pat is a Fellow of the American Organization for Nursing Leadership and the American Academy of Nursing and a highly regarded speaker on leadership.

Dr. Sylvain (Syl) Trepanier
DNP, RN, CENP, FAAN, FAONL

Dr. Syl Trepanier is Providence's System Chief Nursing Officer. In this position, he serves as the voice for nursing at the senior executive level, representing nursing practice for 38 thousand nurses in 52 hospitals and 1085 clinics in seven states. He also serves as the co-chair of the system's Workforce Council. Dr. Trepanier is a seasoned nurse executive with healthcare system experience in executive leadership, organizational transformation, and system standardization. Dr. Trepanier is a Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing and a Fellow of the American Organization of Nursing Leadership (AONL). He obtained his Bachelor's and Master's degree in Nursing from the University of Montreal, Canada, and a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) from Texas Tech University Health Science Center (TTUHSC).


Dr. Barry Dornfeld, PhD

Dr. Barry Dornfeld, Principal at CFAR, is an expert in organizational culture, change, and leadership development. With a background in anthropology and documentary filmmaking, Dr. Dornfeld uses ethnographic techniques to help organizations navigate complex challenges and foster meaningful change. He is a frequent speaker and advisor in healthcare, higher education, and non-profits, and has taught executive programs at institutions such as the Harvard Macy program and the University of Pennsylvania. Co-author of The Moment You Can’t Ignore, Dr. Dornfeld brings a unique perspective on leadership that combines deep listening, cultural awareness, and strategic insight.
